This plate takes its name from the Butterfly Dream series, echoing a poetic reflection by Taiwanese poet Chou Meng-tieh: “It is October. All beautiful things have passed, even the butterfly dream that visits each night has grown cold.” The imagery speaks to the fleeting nature of beauty and the quiet passage of time.

The deep black glaze holds a vivid purple centre, while the hand-painted lily and golden swallow evoke a moment suspended between memory and dream. The contrast of glossy glaze and matte detail captures both the light and shadow of an autumn day.

Craft & Origin

Each Butterfly Dream purple plate is formed by hand on the potter’s wheel, then decorated using traditional underglaze painting techniques. The glossy black glaze is applied to create a deep, reflective surface, while the lily and swallow motifs are hand-painted with fine brushwork. The swallow is finished with matte slip, adding a tactile contrast to the glossy surface. All pieces are made in small batches by artisans in China, where each stage, from shaping to glazing to firing, is carefully completed to preserve both durability and beauty.
